Levels should hit between -9 and -12 db.
Record at 44.1 khz, 24 bit-depth.
Mic should be about a fist-length away from the subject's mouth, coming in from the side to avoid p-pops
Use a foam windscreen if possible.
TIP: Pulling the foam windscreen up by 1-2 centimeters gives a bit more protection against plosives.
If your mic has a high pass filter double check that it’s off.
If you’re going out into the world/elements please use a dead cat.
Please use XLR connections on your recorder. Mini connections have failed us more often in the past.
Do not pause/hit stop on the recording unless you need to replace batteries or something.
If this happens, be sure to let the producers know so you can resync with another clap or snap. Also mention it in writing when you send the file so we can keep it in mind as we cut the interview.
If you're not using phantom power, please change the battery in your *mic* right before the interview. Sound quality degrades as the battery weakens, and it’s being drained even when not in use.
Bring extra batteries and cables (and recorder if possible).
If the subject seems nervous, sometimes asking them to hold the microphone for a second while you do something else makes them more at ease.
